saving a gnucash data file

Hi,
Gnucash is installed on my Windows Vista operating Dell laptop and I am 
in the process of setting up my accounts and preferences. My problem is 
that the File-Save menu item is greyed out so I can't save.  The data 
file saves when I quit (the changes I make during a session are 
retained) and I have disabled the auto-save function. I want to be able 
to save during a session so how do I un-grey the menu command please?
