UNFORTUNATELY, the Ubunu "GnuCash Packaging Team" is NOT providing the
most up-to-date version of GnuCash on their PPA. I have had a few
email discussions with them. I gather they set up the PPA for a
specific situation and have not continued updating it since.

It is true that 2.2.9 may soon be "backported" to a few other
releases. (I believe there are backport requests pending.) I just did
a search at http://packages.ubuntu.com/ and can't find any of the
backports, even though I believe there are some. Try activating the
Backports repository in whatever release of Ubuntu you are using, and
see what version of GnuCash is proposed.

There is a site called GetDeb.net that has an Ubuntu-compatible
package of GnuCash 2.2.9. But you will need to download it and install
it, not upgrade through a repository. Also you should read the
comments because you may have to manually satisfy some dependencies to
get it to install. (I have been assured the package is 'OK' but in
general I do not recommend downloading and installing packages without
knowing and trusting the source.)

Fortunately, GnuCash 2.2.9 WILL be the version available in Ubuntu
9.10 Karmic (due to be released in October).
