I do not understand all this ad hoc backup that people seem to want to do.
I believe in more consistency. I back up _everything_ in my machine every
day (onto tape, but use whatever medium suits you).

I have cron do it in the middle of the night when I am less likely to use my
machine. That way I have daily tapes for 6 days a week, weekly tapes for a
month, and 12 monthly tapes that I keep for a year (those are in the safe
deposit box at my bank in case my house burns down or something).

That way I do not have to remember to back up this, that, and the other
thing because I know it is backed up.
