I agree with you and with Derek. Backup is a system-wide function.
It's crazy to clutter every application's user-interface with a
"please back me up" capability.

My personal approach is to use big, cheap SATA disks in USB shoeboxes.
I'm using the plural because I use the disks for both backup and
archiving, as well as a copy of everything off-site, so there are
three of them. For my home directory, I simply rsync to the current
'primary' backup disk, which usually takes seconds and since it's
fast, I do it often, especially after I've invested a lot of time in,
say, categorizing credit card transactions or reconciling accounts in
Gnucash.
