GnuCash is not meant for the Enterprise.  It's original purpose was
Personal accounting.  It's expanded into both Personal and Small
Business accounting.  You can think of it as a replacement for Quicken
or Quickbooks.  But it's definitely not meant to replace enterprise
systems like SAP, Peachtree, etc.

I cannot answer your last question as GnuCash is a completely volunteer
effort, so each individual contributer would need to answer that
question for you.  For me, I'd like to see GnuCash to a state where my
mom could use it instead of QB.
