Only Learning the System, but invoice numbers...

I am trying GNU cash for the first time for my "work for myself"
business.

I was wondering why the Invoice Number is not automatically generated
and especially not a "Primary Key" field in the DB?

To my limited accounting knowledge, an Invoice Number cannot be used
again if it is already entered/been used.  An Invoice Number is sacred,
no matter what form it takes. and if you have used it before it cannot
be used again.

As I say I am new to this, but a Linux only business, and therefore, an
GNUCash wannabe/mustbe.
