Confused.. why are my expenses "profits"

In gnucash, you don't really need to know about debits and credits.
You can have "user-friendly" labels on the columns.
Go to Edit/Preferences/Accounts and uncheck "Use formal accounting
labels". The column headings will now be more intuitive - Spend,
Receive etc.
