Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) binary dmg install trouble

Hello, I've been running Gnucash under OS X 10.5 for a while, but
recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and found my old fink version no
longer works. So I downloaded John Rall's Gnucash 2.2.9.2 Intel dmg
file in an attempt to install the binary version.
After copying to Applications, running Gnucash.app, and typing a
password so the script could do its thing, I am confronted by two
dialogs. The first says:
"An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information
for Gnucash. Some of your configuration settings may not work
properly."
It has two buttons: Detail and OK, neither of which are clickable (or
at least they don't do anything).
The dialog behind it says:
"Cannot find default values The configuration data used to specify
default values for GnuCash cannot be found in the default system
locations... etc". It has 4 buttons:
Help - fails with another dialog
Quit - works, actually
Skip - caused program to crash
Setup - Brings forth a gconf box that says only "[a GnomeDruid]", from
which I can do nothing
Here are the three relevant dialogs I've mentioned:

I feel like I've missed something simple, but I've searched the list,
google, etc and come up with very little. In my stumbling through the
dark, I have also tried:
1. installing as another user
2. removing all ~/.* config files
3. another 10.6 machine
4. killall dbus-daemon
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
Jeff
