On OSX 10.6.3 new install gnucash starts in japanese or chinese.

It's usually caused by something being not-quite-right in the language defaults on your mac. Open System Preferences>Languages & Text and change the order of the languages, close system prefs, then repeat and change it back to the way you like it. Try Gnucash again.
