The GnuCash Wiki FAQ offers 2 entries that are relevant (once I have
understood what they say!):

Q 4.6: Is there book-closing support, yet?; and

Q 4,10:: The fiscal year is July 1-June 30, how can I change that?

Q 4.6 provides detailed strategies for creating fresh accounts at the
start of each financial year, So far, so good. The answer also points
out that since GnuCash version 2,2.4, the "Close Book" option exists.
Does this mean that the alternative routines - which take up the bulk
of the answer - can safely be ignored? Also, The Wiki FAQ invites
feedback on the "Close Book" option and the Help Manual, that is
included with GnuCash 2.2.6, has no entry for "Tools -> Close Book".
Has any additional information been published on this topic?

Q 4.10. offers a suggestion to the adventurous for setting up this
alternative fiscal year (which I am reluctant to try).. Why not just
"Close Book" on June 30 and open a New Book on July 1? Have I missed
something vital?
