qif import fail

Hi
i am a new user trying to transfer from msmoney to gnucash (mac) but final
import is failing, with no opportunity for correction, due to "dates earlier
than 1970 are not supported", so at that point i have to cancel.
i have no idea of even what to try or look for. any pointers would be
greatly appreciated.
