SLIB problem - installing 2.4 in Kubuntu

I've gotten most of the way through the config needed for installing Gnucash 
2.4, but I got stuck on this:

checking for SLIB support... configure: error: 

Cannot find SLIB.  Are you sure you have it installed?

I've looked at those two links and I have both slib and guile-1.6-slib 
installed, and I still can't get past this error, which seems to have a long 
history.  Clearly it's some kind of versioning/linkage problem, since the 
needed files are there.

This kind of thing is the plague of Linux.
