Automatic Retrieval of Quotes

Dean--
There are a couple of areas that might be causing you trouble.
1) The Read Me says the following under the Finance::Quote section:
"You'll need to have Developer Tools (Tiger or Leopard) or XCode (Snow
Leopard) installed. It's available as an optional install on your
installation DVD."
Did you install the Developer Tools?
2) Your log shows that writing files is not working (each time CPAN tries to install a different supporting package, you get the NOT OK error). This would suggest to me that the permissions are not allowing you write access. It has been some time since I installed these Perl programs, so I can't remember whether I had to use the 'sudo' command to invoke the installation, or whether there is some change you need to the permissions in your Applications folder.
If you're supposed to use sudo, then you can try issuing the command: 'sudo {path-to-gnc-fq-update}' and enter your password when prompted.
If your permissions are messed up, then use Apple's Disk Utility (Applications->Utilities->Disk Utility.app) to check and repair permissions on your hard drive, and see whether that fixes things.
I hope this helps,
David

Attached is a file that shows the text of the install.

I think we need more context on the error. What was being installed? What was the actual command that gave the NOT OK error?

Did not install. The application stopped with the following notation:
"-- NOT OKRunning make test Can't test without successful makeRunning make install make had returned bad status, install seems impossible"
And returned to the root.

Please remember to Reply-All, so others can help you.
As I understand it (I haven't had to install F:Q in a long time), if you simply press Enter at every choice, it should work out.

I tried that and the app ran in a terminal window. However, I did not know how to answer the myriad of questions it asked. I ran it several times answering the questions differently. Each time the same result occurred. The text of the final terminal command was:"Running make for J/JF/JFEARN/HTML-Tree-4.1.tar.gz Is already unwrapped into directory /Users/redinvd/.cpan/build/HTML-Tree-4.1

What am I doing wrong?

John's message included the explanation that the bundle you downloaded included "Update FinanceQuote.app", and that this extra app was broken. He then noted that you could open a Terminal window (in Finder, open Applications->Utilities->Terminal.app) and enter:
/Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/bin/gnc-fq-update
to get Finance:Quote working. Give that a try and see whether it fixes your problem.
David
@John Ralls--I wonder whether it would be better to call this app "Update or Install FinanceQuote.app" to make it clearer to us foggy-brained Mac users what the app does. Better yet, is there some way to have that run automatically once on installation?

Yes, I received his message. It was an a forward of your message. It did not identify anything in addition to your message about putting this back on the list.
There was no mention of a fix in his message.
I can forward his message to you if you like.

"The List" is gnucash-users.
The Mac OS X package maintainer is John Ralls, who responded earlier about why Finance:Quote might not be working for you. Did you see his message? It identified how you would fix your trouble. I can advise further if you need it.

I am not familiar with 'the list' or the Mac OS X package maintainer.

I'm putting this back on the list. Since you installed in the way I have, I don't see why it doesn't work for you. Perhaps the Mac OS X package maintainer will be able to help you out.
David
P.S. -- DO try to use the Reply-All option when you respond; you will get a better overall response from the whole list than just me (especially since I am just a regular user like you, just with a little more time under my Gnucash belt).

I installed from sourceforge.net. I downloaded the Gnucash-Intel-2.2.9.5.dmg. I opened the "Readme first doc and moved the .app file to my applications folder per the instructions.

Can you confirm how you installed Gnucash? The troubles you describe sound like you installed from Fink or Macports, and they didn't get everything in place. I have found that downloading and installing the Gnucash.app bundle took care of all this.

I cannot check the "Get Online Quotes" box in the New Security Window. Under "Quote Source Information" a message reads "Warning: Finance::Quote not installed properly." Consequently the "Get Quotes Button" in the Price Editor window is grayed out.
What needs to be done?
Thanks,

Assuming you are using Gnucash 2.2.9 from the Mac OS X disk image file on Sourceforge (see http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnucash/files/gnucash%20%28stable%29/2.2.9/), then I think you're making this hard on yourself.
You can set up Gnucash to download price quotes from within the application itself. This involves a few steps:
1) Create the securities in question (under Tools menu, or from the New Account window when you choose to create a stock type account; see http://code.gnucash.org/docs/guide/invest-setup1.html for more info). Be sure to check the Get Online Quotes option in the New Security window.
2) Open the price editor window (under Tools menu), and then click the Get quotes button. If all goes well, the hourglass/beachball will appear and then disappear, and expanding your commdity list should result in your seeing a price for today's date (or the last trade date).
As an aside, I'll note that there are ways to run the price update from a Terminal window, making it possible to have these updates run every day, automatically. Some of us have even asked whether this could be an added feature for the start up of Gnucash.
