Gnucash 2.4.0 (Windows)

Rich--

There are no file format changes in going from 2.2 to 2.4; your data file, which is in stored in a format called XML, will continue to work if you choose to go back to 2.2. There isn't really any reason to avoid trying the new version (and a lot of them to give it a go, IMHO).

If nothing else, you could download, disconnect your computer from the Internet, and try installing the new version. If it barfs, then you can report back here, and add to EVERYONE's understanding of the situation. More data points are better!

Cheers,
David

I understand but I have not had to be connected to the internet for GnuCash to work on my windows vista laptop.  Obviously to download the program in the first place I was and probably for the install.
I'm tempted to give it a try but I don't know what it would take to go back to the previous version.

I had been thinking that this was the situation before, but couldn't remember the details. However, https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=363648 clearly shows (in its 118 comments!) that there is quite a bit of weirdness involved here. I am neither a developer nor a Windows user, so I really can't help much in the resolution. From my reading of that bug, it looks as if Orbit, gconf, and Gnucash *under Windows* get confused about where to look for feedback from the other packages. It would also appear that this had been fixed some time ago, although the solution did sound a little ... uncertain.

I will note that the issue has been around since *before* the last stable release, so everyone out there upset that this is happening in 2.4 may want to reconsider their fears. Gnucash inherited this problem a long time ago.
