I can't tell for sure. There will be no guarantees for sure. None of the 
developers is testing or maintaining that upgrade path. Just to be clear: the 
old DB backend and the new have NOTHING in common. The new one is written from 
scratch with no intention whatsoever to be compatible with the new DB backend.

You will definitely not be able to work with the old DB backend now, upgrade 
to a future release and then expect this new release to convert your database 
from the old format to the new.

Perhaps you may be able to export your old DB based data from the current 
release, and import it again in a new release when you decide to migrate. But 
I don't know if it works.
