That is useful to know!

I must have, but I do not have any recollection of having done so; nor
at the time nine or more months ago I would not have known any better.

txn?
I did as you suggested and de-reconciled all the entries in the Visa
payables account. I then tried to reconcile, but the first window which
pops up, the "Reconcile information" window, still showed a starting
balance, this time $36.77, a amount which I did not recognize.
Since I could find no way to change this amount to zero, I tried
something else. I renamed the Visa payables account and then created a
new Visa payables account with the old name. Then, with no entries
posted in it I opened the reconcile procedure. Lo and behold, the
starting balance was zero!
Next I transferred a couple of entries from the old account to the new
one and opened reconcile procedure once again. It still showed the
starting balance as zero!!
It would now seem that if I want to have a reconcilable Visa payables
account I will have to transfer a year's worth of entries. A year ago I
was just learning GnuCash (and relearning all the accounting principles
and practices which I first learned fifty years ago) and made many
mistakes. I now know better than to change a reconciled entry.
Nevertheless, it should be possible for stupid people like me to change
the reconciliation starting balance when absolutely necessary. Should I
file a bug to that effect?
