Done properly the petty cash approach does let you specify "what for" in 
the main books. For that you would each maintain separate "petty cash 
books" and once a month (or whenever) the TOTALS for each expense 
category would be transferred to the main household books and the petty 
cash funds refilled at the same time. Exact details of the transactions 
will depend on where you keep your "petty cash" funds. One usual 
approach is that the fund is assigned an amount and will always be 
restored to that amount (the amount of the replenishment will then 
always be the same as the total of petty cash expenses - petty cash 
income).
