I appreciate the response.

Actually, that is not the problem at all.  Seems the problem is really with
how GnuCash does (or does not) support multi currency transactions.

I found the answer at:

I've revised all the transaction that transfer funds from Euros to dollars
to enter them in the manner described in item 5, and now the balance sheet
works out perfect.

I'm curious that this is not a more common problem - ie that I did not find
other posts about multi currency transactions throwing off the balance
sheet.  However, I'm grateful to have found the resource above that explains
how to solve the problem.

I also found a reference to the following web page that purports to solve
the problem via how the Balance Sheet report calculates, but I have no idea
how to "implement" or install this:

Sure glad there is sufficient use of GnuCash so that the resources to
address such things are available.  I also hope this issue will be addressed
in future releases.
