Save As MySQL is crashing gnucash

made up userid, made up password ?

You can't just 'make up' a username and password.  You need to login to
mysql as the root user and create a username with a password.  You
probably also need to create a database (named gnucash I presume). 
Under Linux/UNIX one would fire up the mysql command from a shell with
the root user and password. I believe a *fresh* install leaves the root
user with no password (which really should get changed as the first post
install step).  Creating users and databases is covered in the MySQL
reference manual.
