Use of Python in Gnucash

Recently I was asking on-list about a rather awkward scheduled
transaction.

Even more recently there has been some mention of Python "bindings" in
Gnucash.  I'm not quite sure what these are.  Perhaps they are just ways
for Gnucash to use its own or standard Python modules.

But I know that Python can be used to write macros in OpenOffice
(although I have never actually done it).  I was wondering whether the
same sort of thing is possible in Gnucash.  If so, where could I find
out more about how to set about using it?
