Good eye, Derek. I didn't even notice that. That could very well be the problem.
Peter, try editing Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/etc/gconf/2/path so that that line is
xml:readwrite:"$(HOME)"/.gconf
I don't know if gconfd is smart enough to handle that correctly, but it's worth trying.
If it doesn't work, create a symlink in /Volumes without spaces and put that path in gconf/2/path.
