Martin will have to explain what's going on with the currency setting, I couldn't get it to change either (fortunately, I don't have to). (Martin, I've pasted below the gwenywfar errors from my attempt to change the currency.)

In Preferences>Online Banking, enable "Verbose Debug Messages" (at the bottom of the page), try to get a balance, and after Gnucash crashes open a bug report [1] and attach the trace file [2] to the bug.
