edit gnucash file in ubuntu

OK, probably elementary questions....
What is a backend?

How do I find out which backend I am using?

BTW. Looking at the type file in Nautilus, it says it is Gzip.
The archive manager for Ubuntu Gnome is File Roller. Didn't find Gunzip in Synaptic. (Not trying to be funny at all.) At my age by the time I figure out how to do something using the CL, I have forgotten what I wanted to do.

Thanks,
Harold

The file is GZipped.  You can use gunzip to decompress it down to an XML
file.  Assuming, of course, you're using the XML backend and not the
SQLite backend.
