When I had a mortgage, they even gave me a slight reduction if I paid
automatically. Similarly, my credit union eliminates the monthly fee if
I have monthly payments made into it electronically, so I put my social
security in that way.

Your bank is so greedy to charge you a fee to make a mortgage payment.
Tell them you will re-finance if they do not wave the fee. (Better check
that your house is not under water and that you could refinance before
you make this threat.)
