How do I manually create/edit a preferences file.

I was able to get results by editing

\gnucash\etc\gconf\gconf.xml.defaults\%gconf-tree.xml

using notepad and searching (ctrl-f) on

"tip of the day" and setting bool value to false
"auto-save" and setting the bool value to false
"new_user" and setting the bool value to false

if you have other settings, search on the string for that setting.
