You can safely open an xac file, close it, and re-open the original
data file.  Make sure that you know which is your data file before you
open one of the xac files.  I suggest making sure your backup of the
data file is up to date before doing anything else, however.  If you
don't have an off-PC backup then make one.  Remember a PC or Disk may
go up in smoke at any time.
