2.4.0 Windows version and using shared folders

I would expect it to be able to do so. I don't have access to a GnuCash 2.4
setup, so I can't verify that myself. I can only tell it works on Windows XP
here.

Well, not necessarily. If GnuCash 2.2.x works fine and GnuCash 2.4 doesn't, it
may well be a problem with GnuCash 2.4. The file dialog was redesigned in 2.4
to accomodate the new SQL backends. Perhaps something went wrong there. In
both cases though GnuCash depends on some Gnome libraries to provide the file
selection bits. But I think a different version of those libraries is used for
2.2 and 2.4. That could also be the cause.
What you could try as a workaround, is to type the location you are looking
for in the text field near the top of the window.
If you enter "F:\<rest-of-path-to-your-data-file>", can you then open a file
from the shared directory ?
