Software credits each debit for cash

I have just installed gnucash and imported my qif files from Quicken.  In my main bank account I noticed that I was thousands of pounds (UK user) in credit.

What has happened is that each time I have a Cash Withdrawal the amount is automatically credited in a second entry.  It is impossible to delete the credit entry as when I do the debit entry disappears.

I am in need of help!
