Luckily i had another folder with some old files and I only lost a couple weeks of entries.. So not as bad as I originally thought but I have lost some confidence in the program. It is not the first time I have had a scare with gnucash. One time I did something wrong with the dates on a transaction and I had to manually edit the data file due to a known bug..

As I am a new user of Linux I noticed that you used / instead of \ in
your file listing. That suggests that you may be using Linux, which
requires mounting of all external devices before their respective
directories can be found and read. Thus the previous suggestion about
USB drives applies also to network resources and other removable drives
or media such as optical drives.
Did the parent directory for mydocuments/gnucash ever change?

Any place other than your home drive can at times be either invisible or
in a different location than before.
