I am not sure how many revisions or versions have come out and how
often they have of GnuCash, but if you have an "older" version I would
suggest you transfer your working file (backup first of course) and
stay with that new version.
I am a firm believer that changing over to new versions of software
just to be updated is UTTER CRAP. But, in the case of this
application, possibly it might help. I'm not sure why you have a .gmc
file, I thought the extension was .gnucash. As I type, I think you may
have just abbreviated. In any event, please keep us updated as to how
your recovery process is going. I REALLY do not want to run into data
loss issues like that and I'm sure you don't want to ever again as
well.
I will end with a quick "story" of a few weeks ago when I had a bit of
scare of my own. It did not involve GnuCash, but it reinforced in me
the importance of BACKUPS.
It was mid-terms and I had completed 3 out of 4 chapters of Accounting
homework ("Asset:Time = Gone"). I did it all in a text editor (cause
I"m gangster like that) and I was switching back and forth between
files. Un-benounced (spelling?) to me, I had accidentally completed a
problem in a chapter and had accidentally overwritten a COMPLETE
chapter of work with the same file name. Need I say more? To my
credit, I had PRINTED out most of that chapter and had only a few
problems to rework. I need not explain the anguish and frustration I
felt. So, gents the moral of the story? You know.
One of the things I hate most is when I have something happen that
causes data loss and everyone keeps saying "should have ..." I didn't
tell that story for that purpose. I will loose data again in the
future, TRUST ME.

I really hope that somehow I deleted it myself and the program did not have a bug because I am worried this could happen again.. Luckily i had another folder with some old files and I only lost a couple weeks of entries.. So not as bad as I originally thought but I have lost some confidence in the program. It is not the first time I have had a scare with gnucash. One time I did something wrong with the dates on a transaction and I had to manually edit the data file due to a known bug..
