separating data files from backup files

Yeah, a * is a wildcard. Edit it out of the path.

If it's not responding there's a dialog box open. It might be hiding behind another window, especially if you've been banging on stuff trying to get something to happen. Try Exposé (F8) to show all of the app's windows, or dragging windows around.
