You don't specify which operating system you are using, but on my 
Windows 7 system the latest data files are located in

C:\Users\myaccountname\My Documents\gnucash\

Also, please note the following equation:

the value of a backup = the cost of replacing everything since the last 
backup

I have relearned the true meaning of this equation many times in my 
life. :-[
