so I wonder why they wouldn't contribute to the improvement of GnuCash 
instead of provide a thinly-veiled criticism of other developers' efforts?

Well, without being too harsh, "Omphaloskepsis" is contemplation of one's 
navel as an aid to meditation. But I fear it is a different body part that 
their head is too near to be able to even see their navel, and I think the 
departure from the list may be for the best.

For myself, my sincere appreciation and thanks go to the GnuCash 
team.   It's the nature of *many* open source projects that developers 
"have not got the time to add features or fix bugs that are not relevant to 
themselves", and I'm glad they take the time to develop it at all!
