In a couple of weeks you could upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04 which has GC
2.4.10.  In fact I have been using 12.04 Beta for several months with
few problems (Unity is much more solid than on 10.10).  Keep backups
of everything if you do this however.  You should have backups anyway
of course.
