Missing menus

Do you mean that it used to be ok with Unity on Ubuntu 11.04 but has
now started going wrong for no obvious reason?

I vaguely remember some such issues, Unity was a bit flakey on 11.04,
but it is a very long time ago.  11.04 goes out of support in a couple
of months so I suggest upgrading to 12.04 which is pretty solid and
will be supported for five years.
