Closing books (was Re: Has anyone installed the GnucashEditor (view & edit GnuCash Files)?

The Close books function (at least in GC 2.4.7) creates a set of 
reversing entries with a name (eg "Closing Entry - 2010") and date (eg 
12/31/10) of your choosing. It doesn't delete anything. Then the income  
(or Profit and Loss) reports have an option to include or exclude these 
closing entries; so that you don't have to worry about being able to 
print a report for 2010, just exclude "Closing Entry" from the report.
