Any differences in choosing MySql vrs XML file?

I was really hoping I hit the jackpot.  I'd like to put my backend online and
be able to create am app for iPhone so that it could connect and enter
transactions while I'm on the road. Or at least something that can track my
transactions on the road and I can import them in.
