I just want to say something about this difficult problem.

There is more involved than just gnucash coding, what works or doesn't. 
The PROBLEM is less well defined than people seem to think it is. When 
accounting is being done for multiple currencies there are statutory 
(depending on jurisdiction) and organizational (if allowed choices by 
the jurisdiction, which chosen) procedures for determining WHEN one is 
to be valued against the other. There can be no "one size fits all" 
solution.
