Notice the revision number; the one you have is from just before this release, and the "M" means someone built it from a modified source tree.That shouldn't matter, though: All of the changes between r21890 and r21973 were either on trunk or for M$Windows. They wouldn't affect opening the file.

You started off this saying that you "had to reboot the iMac" and that since then you haven't been able to open the file. Could it be that you were using a different Gnucash before the reboot?

Have you looked at your tracefile [1] yet? There should be a couple of error messages there about what it didn't like.
