Check printing in windows?

John Layman made a very good point about the check printing problem in
windows OS in the saved reports and preferences thread.

This makes me ask if it is possible to print checks 'normally' in Linux
and OSX?  If so, would it make sense to create a virtual computer to use
just for check printing?  I think that would be another unsatisfactory
work-around.

So, why does this bug languish?
