This is what it is supposed to do.  GnuCash uses double-entry 
accounting.  There are always two accounts.  To use your example, the 
$100 for membership must go somewhere, most likely into your 
organization's bank account.  Look at the three right-hand columns.  At 
the top it should say something like Tot Charge | Tot Income | Balance.  
The $100 goes into the Tot Income column.  On the next line, $100 goes 
into the Tot Charge column.  In the column to its left should appear 
Assets:Current Assets:Bank Acct or something like that.  Put the numbers 
in, press <Enter>.  If you now open Bank Acct you will see the same 
entry, except that the amounts will be in columns opposite to what they 
are in Income:Membership.

There is a manual with GnuCash.  Click on Help and select Tutorial and 
Concepts Guide.  You should read this - it will help a lot.
