Any plans for Mac OS 10.8?

Actually, 2.4.0 was rather buggy. It would be good if you could upgrade to 2.4.11, but it sounds like you're getting some unusual results. When you drag Gnucash from the .dmg to the Applications folder you should get a dialog box asking if you want to replace the existing one or keep both. Since that's just Finder doing its thing, I don't see why the computer should hang or that you'd get messages about it being wrong for the computer. You shouldn't try to run Gnucash from the dmg.

Just to make sure, you downloaded Gnucash-Intel-2.4.11.dmg, right?
