Backing Up File

I read the sections on Backup and Recovery and I have a question. I had my data file get corrupt today so I used the latest backup file with the long number to make my entries.

Question:

1. Do I now do a Save As and give it a new file name that is shorter than the one with the long number string?
2. The next time, the new file will open.

Is this the correct way to recover from a bad file??
