unusably slow - please help!

Hello

I am trying to run gnu-cash (2.4.11) on Windows 7. My laptop seems to work
overtime when this application is running. Whenever I change something like
making an account a place-holder account the pc seems to goto sleep (can't
do anything) but actually the fans run at full power, the cpu usage etc
spikes. this lasts for about 40 seconds and then it goes back to normal;
until I make another change. I have tried to set the auto backup to never
(I originally had it backing up automatically) but this doesnt seem to help.

I ended up deleting the entire application and files and started again by
downloading clean. Same result.

Any ideas?
