Harold--

If you're in the US, have you explored the tax options? 

1) Look at Edit->Tax Report Options, where you assign particular accounts to tax code lines. 

2) Then, run the TXF report, which uses the settings you made in step (1). 

Although setup can be a chore, ongoing maintenance is pretty simple, and for me consists mostly of ensuring that the numbers I have at the end of the year match the tax forms.

The tax options are principally tailored for the US tax code; it may be that one could overload those entries and make use of them for other jurisdictions.
