As far as I am aware this problem is not addressed anywhere in gnucash. I
would imagine that providing functionality to transfer money between files
without having to manually add to both files would be far from trivial.

Having accounts and their totals totally hidden within a single file and
only accessible to specific users would be useful and probably address this
as well but is probably wishful thinking.

Yes. Since there is no functionality to merge sets of accounts everything
would have to be done manually and the gain is probably not worth the
effort.

If these are personal accounts rather than business accounts then whatever
works for you should be okay but there is a potential drawback here. If you
want to look at total expenses across both files you will get a figure
higher than real expenses unless you manually remove the transfer amounts.
The only real expense involved will be the (bank) charges getting the money
from one country to another.

Personally I would keep everything in Equity just making the adjustment a
credit or debit to reflect the direction of movement. That way all
transactions will be between Equity and Assets and not impact Income and
Expenses.
