What's the meaning of the U (update) in Reconciliation?

I don't see a reply yet, so here is my understanding, based on observation:

The U+R option in OFX importing means that the importer found a matching transaction in your data file for a transaction in the OFX file, and the importer is going to replace whatever you have in your data file with the contents in the OFX file. Personally, this doesn't make sense to me (seeing how the transaction in the file is the one that I presumably caused to exist), but that is what it means. I usually uncheck U+R and instead opt for R.

HTH,
David

Subject: What's the meaning of the U (update) in Reconciliation?

Hi there,

I downloaded my credit card statement as a QFX file and have done File >
Import > Import OFX/QFX...

I think I understand (from reading the Packt Publishing book) how Gnucash
tries to match the file's entries to Gnucash's transactions.  What's not in
the book is the U+R or the "Update and reconcile (auto) match" option.

That is, why are some entries marked as R and some as U+R?

Thanks,

Ari
