Invoices cannot be opened anymore

I am afraid I don't know what to tell you.  It sounds like your data
file got corrupted somehow.  However if you're using XML that shouldn't
have affected anything per se.

One thing you can try is to run a diff between the last .xac file and
the first .gnucash file in your set of backups and see what differences
might exist.
