Hi Helen,

The most likely cause of this behaviour is that you have told gnucash to 
not let you alter existing transactions anymore. This can happen if you 
answer the question "Do you want to save changes to the transaction" 
with No/Cancel while "Do not ask me again" is checked in the same 
window.

You can reset the answer to this question via Actions -> Reset Warnings.
