How to get stocks' total return?

*Warning: I am a complete newbie*

How do I get the /rate/ of return?  Thanks to this thread, I found the
Advanced Portfolio report.  But the rate of return and rate of gain are
blank.  I entered all of the data manually from the spreadsheet where I kept
it before.  I did balance everything by creating an income account, but I
don't know if I may have other accounting holes contributing to this
problem.

(I'm looking for the number that I would have called "rate of return" in
common parlance, but in this report it seems to be called "rate of gain." 
The "return" confusingly includes my income transfers: basis + gain = value
= return.)

Using version 2.4.13.
